Is candida overgrowth the culprit of your problematic skin?

First off, what the heck is candida?

Candida albicans yeast is a normal part of your gut flora, a group of microorganisms that live in the digestive tract that helps you digest your food. At normal levels, Candida is harmless but if there's an overgrowth, candida can lead to significant health problems – in men, women and even children and I have read statistics that this affects around 75% of the American population.

Candida overgrowth can cause the intestinal wall to become permeable (otherwise known as Leaky Gut)  and allows partially digested proteins and other toxins to be released into the body. Yuck!

If gone untreated candida overgrowth can cause serious illness.

Here are a few symptoms of candida overgrowth:

  • Exhaustion

  • Cravings for sweets

  • Weakened immune system

  • Bad breath

  • White coating on tongue

  • Brain fog

  • Hormone imbalance

  • Joint pain

  • Loss of sex drive

  • Chronic sinus and allergy issues

  • Digestive problems - gas, bloating, diarrhea

  • Weak immune system

  • Skin and nail fungal infections, such as athlete’s foot or toenail fungus

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, lupus, psoriasis, scleroderma, or multiple sclerosis

  • Difficulty concentrating, poor memory, lack of focus, ADD, ADHD, and brain fog

  • Skin issues like acne, eczema, psoriasis, hives, and rashes

  • Irritability, mood swings, anxiety, or depression

  • Vaginal infections, urinary tract infections, rectal itching, or vaginal itching

  • Severe seasonal allergies or itchy ears

  • Strong sugar and refined carbohydrate cravings

What causes candida?

  • Chronic stress

  • Poor diet (high carbohydrate, inflammatory foods and refined sugars)

  • Excessive alcohol and caffeine

  • Use of antibiotics

  • Contraceptive Pill

  • Diabetes

  • Chemical exposure to pesticides, home cleaning products, contaminated water, etc.

How do I get rid of candida overgrowth?

  • To be completely successful, you would need to omit all sugar (including fruit), grains, alcohol, caffeine, dairy from your diet completely for at least a month.  For more severe cases of candida, it could take several months to clear the overgrowth.

  • Taking probiotics.

  • Take anti-fungal herbs such as clove and oregano.  Taking coconut oil can also help kill the fungus.

After having my own personal battle with candida and trying out various candida cleanses with astounding results, I became inspired to create a cleanse that would address candida and rebuild the intestinal wall lining.  By applying some ayurvedic practices and inspiration from both candida and microbiome diets, clients would detoxify and support the internal organs, drastically reduce candida overgrowth and strengthen the digestive system.  The end result? An efficiently running digestive system, total body wellness, and glowing skin!
